An Update on the Expanded Maternity Leave Bill

The Expanded Maternity Leave Act of 2017 is undoubtedly one of the pending bills closest to every mother's heart. Following the report that Mommy Mundo made on its approval by the Senate, we received numerous inquiries from our community, some of whom were pregnant moms, about the status of the bill. Mommy Mundo reached out to the office of Senator Risa Hontiveros, the author of the bill, and we received this reply:

[“Good day, the fight for the Expanded Maternity bill is not yet over. Though it has been approved by the Senate, the House of Representatives still needs to submit its version which is just on its second reading. When the House of Representatives has its version, the bill will go through the Bicameral Conference for screening and for integration of the two versions. Only then will it be submitted to the president for signing.”]

The counterpart bill of the House of Representatives calls for increasing the maternity leave period to one hundred (100) days for female workers in the government service and in the private sector, and granting an option to extend for an additional thirty (30) days without pay.

According to Congress records, the bill is labeled as “Unfinished Business” and in the "Period of Interpellation.”
